Ruse, on the banks of the River Danube and on the Bulgarian/Romanian border, can be conveniently described in 2 words: A DUMP. Maybe that's a slightly harsh assesment. However, It is everything but a 'very appealing and lively town' as described by the lonely planet author - was he on some kind of back-hander from the town's mayor?
The owner of The English Guesthouse is also described as a Charismatic Englishman - I'd personally describe him as a complete d***head - spent the best part of 20 minutes with him and his mates from Harrogate and all I heard was: "Am I not so cool and great???" OR "I am doing the Bulgarian girl over there , so hands off"...pathetic.
Left as quickly as I could and by 6:15 this morning was crossing the border into Romania..
